It’s an epic poem written in verse which has come to us copied onto 74 sheets of parchment from the XIV century, the first and a further two of which are missing. At the end of the work, it is stated that it was copied in 1207 by Per Abbat (Pedro Abad). From his manuscript was to be copied in turn the version in our possession, which is preserved at the National Library. It is neither known when the work was written or who its author was. It tells the story of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, also known as el Cid Campeador or (fighting) Champion, when king Alfonso VI banishes him in 1081. El Cid, a knight of the court and brave gentleman, dies in 1099.
